He was born on 22 July 1946, Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. His parent was very strict and didn’t allow him to see a film until he was 18. He graduate from Calvin College, Columbia University and decided to study at UCLA’s graduate film program. He is influenced by the contemporaries like Bresson, Ozu and Dreyer. He became a film critic and writer. He later began to write screen play. His moment came when he and his brother wrote a screenplay for Martin Scorsese film Taxi Driver (1976). They were paid $325,000 dollars and became one of Hollywood top screenwriter. They wrote this during the drinking and depression in 1970s. His success allowed him to direct his own films. One of his well know films was Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985)
